Explore Capital of Sarawak as you Tour around:
The Kuching Chinatown is marked with a grandiose Chinese-inspired red archway that certainly indicates the entry point of this popular shopping and eating place. The refurbished old shophouses are surprisingly nice to look at, with brightly painted walls and windows, garbage-free streets (yes, most parts of Kuching are surprisingly clean!) with no moving vehicles crowding the alleyways.
Tua Pek Kong Temple
If you ever wanted to visit an old Chinese temple, this is it. Sitting on a foothill and commanding the view over the river and Main Bazaar, the ornately decorated Tua Pek Kong Temple, which was one of the few buildings that survived the 1884 Great Fire of Kuching, is said to have the best Feng Shui location in the city. It is believed to date back to 1843 and has been on official records since 1876. Various traditional festivals are held here every year, including the famous Wang Kang Festival to commemorate the dead.
Civic Centre
The futuristic umbrella-shaped Civic Centre tower offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Kuching and the surroundings. The city and its hinterland, Mount Serapi, Mount Santubong, and even the mountains of Kalimantan are visible on a clear day. It also houses the now closed Sultan Iskandar Planetarium, with its white-domed structure that opened on 19 January 1989 and was the first planetarium in Malaysia.
Malay Kampong
There are many authentic Malay Kampungs (traditional Malay villages) along the north bank of Sarawak River, next to Fort Margherita. One of the more famous ones is Kampung Boyan. Explore the villages and savor the variety of traditional Malay snacks, dishes, and seafood as you enjoy the sunset against the skyline of Kuching on the other side. Enjoy looking at some of the most beautiful examples of traditional and modern Malay architecture.
The Kuching Waterfront is the most popular gathering place in this capital city. The esplanade stretches for about 900 meters along the south bank of the Sarawak river. Many colonial-era buildings seen here have since been re-purposed for modern use.
The Waterfront offers an excellent view of the north bank of the river. The Astana (governor’s mansion) and Fort Margherita stand out with their white exterior. The imposing State Assembly Building dominates the skyline.
At night, the whole stretch of the esplanade comes alive. Buskers fill the air with ethnic and contemporary songs and music. To add to the vibrancy, the Darul Hana Musical fountain* comes on with its colorful display.
* Two shows from Mondays to Thursdays from 8.30 pm-8.45 pm and 9.30 pm-9.45 pm. There are three shows from Fridays to Sundays at 8.30pm-8.45pm, 9.30pm-9.45pm and 10.30pm-10.45pm.
Fort Margherita is an old fort constructed in 1879 by Charles Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak situated in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. The fort is an important landmark and monument in Sarawak's history which goes back to the Brooke Dynasty.
The Old Court House was built in the late 19th century to serve as the city’s administrative center. It now houses a cafe and bar, the excellent RaneeMuseum, and several venues for art and performance. There's usually something happening, but if not, just wander around and enjoy the peaceful verandahs. Kuching's main tourist information center is also located here. Out front, across the street from the Square Tower, stands the Brooke Memorial, erected in 1924 to honor Charles Brooke.
General Post Office
Built-in 1931, it appears to belong to the early 19th century with its neo-classical style and Corinthian columns. Completed in 1932 under Charles Vyner (the third Rajah), the Neo-Classical facades were quite in contrast to the style of buildings favored by James and Charles Brooke (the first and second Rajah).
Square Tower
Don’t miss the Square Tower at the edge of the Waterfront as you stroll along the south bank of Sarawak River. From the top of the tower, you can view the same spectacular vistas of Mounts Santubong and Serapi that enchanted such illustrious visitors as Somerset Maugham. It was originally meant as a prison when it was built in 1879. It later became a fortress but it never fired a shot in any conflict, unlike its wooden predecessor which was burnt down in the 1857 Gold Miners’ Rebellion.

Orangutan Watching at Semenggoh Nature Park
Breakfast at Hotel
Proceed for ~35 minutes, 22 Kilometers drive to:
Semenggoh Nature Park
Traveling overland (30 min) followed by a brief hike through the thick forest. Unlike in a Zoo, the Orang Utans are set free in a 653-hectares forest reserve. Orphaned or rescued from captivity, they are trained to survive in the wild.
Semenggoh Orangutan Gallery
Learn fascinating facts about the Orangutans, human’s closest relatives that share nearly 97% of the same DNA. There are charts and visual designs to educate visitors on the differences between male and female orangutans, their life cycle, eating, and living habits.
Also, learn about the orangutan conservation in Semenggoh and Sarawak as a whole.
Semi-WildSemenggoh Orangutan
Semenggoh’s main attraction for visitors is its Wildlife Centre, where endangered species, once kept illegally as pets are trained on how to fend for themselves before being released into the forest. Over the years, many orangutans have been trained and released and now form a semi-wild colony in the reserve. As regular as clockwork, the orangutans swing down from the trees for a free handout of fruit. It is one of the few places in the world where humans can interact with their shy jungle cousins.
Orangutan Feeding Time
Do not miss the orangutans’ feeding hours. There are two feeding hours per day, once in the morning (9.00 am – 10.00 am) and once in the afternoon (33.00 pm – 4.00 pm). However, feeding of orangutans does not guarantee the sighting of the red apes.
Botanical Research Centre
The research center consists of an orchid nursery, ethnobotanical gardens, a fruit orchard, a neat terrarium, a bamboo garden, and also a nice pond with floating pavilion. Visitors will get the see a wide range of plants, both originating from local and international. Visitors who love flora will admire this nature reserve.
